iHEALTH brings medical science and technology closer to students from Trewhela’s School and Colegio Antupirén

The Millennium Institute iHEALTH continues to strengthen its commitment to scientific outreach and the development of STEM vocations through two activities aimed at high school students during the last week of October. Through hands-on experiences, guided visits, and specialized talks, students explored how engineering, artificial intelligence, and medical technologies contribute to diagnostics and health.

Students from the Trewhela’s School programming elective visit iHEALTH’s Central Hub

On Monday, October 27, a group of 11th- and 12th-grade students from the elective course “Computational Thinking and Programming” at Trewhela’s School visited iHEALTH’s Central Hub, in an activity co-organized with PAR Explora Región Metropolitana Sur Oriente and the Millennium Institute for the Foundations of Data (IMFD), which they also toured during their visit.

The visit included two experimental activities that allowed the students to learn, in an applied way, about the physics behind magnetic resonance technologies.

First, Joaquín Errandonea, Master’s student in Engineering Sciences at UC, led a practical introduction to magnetism, where the students explored how magnetic fields are formed using magnets and iron filings. Through this demonstration, they learned how these principles underpin medical imaging technologies such as MRI and the research carried out at iHEALTH.

Afterwards, they visited the 0.55T Magnetic Resonance Scanner, guided by Ignacio Celis, Medical Technologist and operator in charge of the equipment. There, they interacted with the scanner, observed previously acquired images of fruits, and learned about the clinical diagnostic possibilities offered by this type of instrumentation.

The visit allowed students to connect physics and engineering with real applications in healthcare, bringing them closer to emerging fields such as artificial intelligence for medical imaging.

Ultrasound and new medical technologies: iHEALTH visits Colegio Antupirén

As part of its efforts to bring science directly into educational spaces, iHEALTH also visited Colegio Antupirén, in Peñalolén. On this occasion, Verónica Marín, PhD candidate in Engineering Sciences with a specialization in Electrical Engineering at UC, offered a talk to the school’s Health Sciences elective.

During her presentation, Verónica explained the principles of ultrasound and how echography works—fundamental tools for diagnosis and clinical follow-up across multiple specialties. She also introduced students to the development of new technologies, including artificial intelligence models that enhance image quality and support medical decision-making.

The session helped students understand how engineering, physics, and innovation intersect in healthcare systems, and how these disciplines open opportunities for new solutions that benefit patients.

These activities reflect iHEALTH’s commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences and inspiring future generations to explore the intersection of science, technology, and artificial intelligence applied to medicine.
